Kevin McArthur, a long time client, had the best presented clip in the Elders Special Corriedale Wool Sale on Feb 18th 2010. Congratulations must also go to his Wool Classer Mr J McIntyre.

2010 ET program

The Elites list of the Jan 2010 run of across Tasman Lambplan ranks Coora 129/04 and Coora 151/07 easily on top of the dams' list. A decision was made to do an embryo transplant with these outstanding ewes. They were flushed to 282/08 for his excellent index and carcase attributes, and 212/07 for his index, fertility and wool traits. This pushed the production boundaries higher.

We transfered 12 Embryos.

Caste for age ewes sell well

Mary Johnson and Philip Doherty trading as Tintaen partners report selling 170 CFA 8 year old Corriedale ewes in Jan 2009 for $63. As some of these ewes had broken mouths this is an outstanding result.

Davis family have outstanding worm test results

Philip Davis of Mangoplah, south of Wagga Wagga reports that with testing for worm egg counts regularly he hasn't drenched an adult sheep since 2004. Not only has this saved him a lot of money in drench, there has been no selection for drench resistance and therefore he has no major drench resistance problems with any of the drenches.
Excellent management and good genetics pay off.
All the trait leaders for worm resistance on the Oct 2008 run of Corriedale LAMBPLAN are Coora blood.

Wool sales

Coora wool sold well again on Feb 14 2008. The Coora stud cut 55.1 kg to the hectare, tested 25.5 microns and yielded an average 73.6% The greasy price averaged 444 c per kg giving a return of $243.6 per hectare in the year the lamb marking percentage was 127%.

Legacy Fleece show 2007

Coora took out 2nd & 3rd prizes in the Corriedale ram section.

Kevin McArthur, a long time client, won the best Corriedale ewe or wether fleece.

David Whyte, of Elders Hamilton, Kevins wool advisor, with Kevin McArthurs winning Legacy fleece.

Sires for 2008 lambing

The Performance Sire Group of The ACA have chosen Coora 386/06 and Coora 225/04 as 2 of the 3 common sires for 2008 lambing. Semen is being held at Total Livestock Services Camperdown Vic. and is available to non group members at $30 per dose.

Lambing 2007

We were very pleased to note that about 65 % of the 2 year old maiden ewes had multiple births in 2007 When we started the stud we could only get 10 to 15% of this group to have twins.

To check that the rams are working we use ram harnesses. This also allows the splitting of the lambing ewes into first and second cycle lambing mobs, meaning we don’t have to go around all mated ewes every day. We were pleased to mark 134.5% lambs in the ewes that lambed from the first cycle mating in 2007. The marking percentage in the ewes lambing from the second cycle mating was 94%. This gave an overall marking percentage of 126.9 %.

Of course we cannot say that this gain is all genetic, as we have been applying more than replacement fertilizer of both potash and phosphate and have had a great improvement in the clover content of the pastures on Gometra since we moved the Stud here 11 years ago. Also the plantations we have planted together with our neighbouring blue gums have improved the shelter and therefore the survival of the lambs. However the stocking rate has also gone up. We over wintered 500 ewes, 200 replacement ewe weaners, 160 ram weaners and about 20 older rams on the 200 acres available.

The Lambplan analysis genetic gain graph tells us that the stud has improved in Number of Lambs Weaned (NLW) by 6% over the last 10 years, which is about the genetic gain the LAMBPLAN geneticists predict (+5%) we would make in 10 years selecting on the Corriedale $ index.

Pleasing fertility results

Michael Deppeler is very pleased with the 31/05 fertility tagging 160% lambs by him in 2006.

The outstanding Narambah 109/00

T Manchester has selected Narambah 109/00 for use in his stud because of his balance of figures and his muscling. The ASBV of +1.5 for EMD is outstanding in the Corriedale breed.

Trans-Tasman Analysis gets Go-ahead.

At the 13th World Corriedale Congress at Lincoln University Christchurch NZ. Both LAMBPLAN and SIL leaders Richard Apps and Richard Wakelin reported that there were no problems in the running of a trial analysis using both the data sets from Australia and New Zealand. A meeting of representatives of the NZ Corriedale Society and the Australian Corriedale Association discussed the way forward in the publishing of the results, and the frequency of running such an analysis.

Coora Stud stands up well to Drought.

The year 2006 has again seen the rainfall for the year in the bottom 10 percentile for the district. This had a positive effect on lambing though and a marking percentage of over 120% was achieved. One client in the district reported a weaning to ewes mated percentage of 129.

Shearing went well with the ewes cutting 6.5 kg, and the ewe weaners 5.5kg. This gave a cut of 76.53kg per hectare.

Wool prices hold up.

The test on the Coora 2006 clip came in at an average of 25.3 microns and a 68% yield. This reflected the drought year but was very pleasing considering the production. The total clip averaged 413 cents per kilogram in the Melbourne sale of 8/3/07.

This returned $262, including GST, per hectare to the bank (selling costs out).

Coora Embryo Transplant Program 2006 Completed

With access to limited semen from Longfield 83/02, the top producing sire in New Zealand, and the middling success of AI programs in the past, a decision was made to do an ET program.

This allowed us to multiply the best producing ewes in the Coora flock and make best use of the limited semen.

It was decided to flush the ewes twice, freezing the first flush, and implanting the second flush direct into recipient ewes.

The first flush was implanted at about the same time as the second flush, thus enabling all lambs in the Coora stud to be equally assessed on LAMBPLAN.

The ewes selected were Coora 210/02 and 75/02. They both have a Corriedale $index of over 121 and are 2nd and 1st respectively on the LAMBPLAN elites list of active ewes. They are also ranked 1st & 2nd for number lambs weaned out of active ewes, on Corriedale LAMBPLAN.

This ranking showed up in the flushing too, as the normal number of eggs collected per ewe averages about 6. Hamilton Sheep Services who did the ET were amazed to get over 20 eggs from 210 in each flush. 75/02 wasn’t far behind with 15&17 eggs per flush.

After careful consideration it was decided to mate the ewes to the top indexing young Australian rams for the first flush. This will give us a good link between the Australian and New Zealand indexes.

Seventeen high quality embryos from the mating of Coora 210/02 with Coora 80/04, and five quality embryos from the mating of Coora 75/02 with Coora 120/04 were frozen.

The matings for the second flush were 210/02 to Longfield 83/04, and 75/02 to Longfield E17 the top New Zealand ram for “number of lambs born” and 8th for Dual-purpose index in NZ.

If you wish to discuss the 2006 ET Program, feel free to contact us at Coora Corriedale Stud.

Claire Blackwood holding 335/2000

Congratulations to Peter & Claire Blackwood on starting their new Corriedale stud based on Claire's parents, (the Dennis family) Fairfield Stud ewes. This enthusiastic young couple have identified a market, set their objectives, and are on their way to a successful enterprise at Longford, Tasmania. Peter has had the benefit of training under the great educator Dick Wigan. Claire is the third generation in the Dennis family to own a Corriedale stud. To join to these ewes they have selected proven sires Longfield E17/99 and White Rock Mains 78/04, ranked 8th and 12th on production out of 500 sires in New Zealand, and Coora 335/00 ranked 1st for Corriedale $ index on LAMBPLAN in Australia.

Adelaide Royal Show 2005

Rams 11 and 17 (nearest camera) of 2004 second prize winners in the maternal section of the Tatiara class at the Adelaide Royal Show 2005 for 2 rams under 11/2 years suitable to produce.

This class has traditionally been dominated by the Border Leicester breed in that they usually take 1st & 2nd and we believe this is the first time Corriedales have been in the winning list.

This group also won the Corriedale section of this class in Adelaide. At the 2007 Hamilton sheepvention, Coora was placed 2 & 3 in Lambplan maternal class based on the same system as the Adelaide show Tatiara Class.

Winning Rams fleece

Past Legacy President and honorary life member of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Corriedale Association Mr Eric Causer inspecting the winning Rams fleece at the Hamilton & District Legacy Fleece show in 2005. This fleece from Coora 31/2003 is the 9th winner of this class for Coora in the last 10 years Coora also won 2nd prize with the fleece of 227/2002.

"Eulameet" sucess with Coora sires

Ian and Sandra Colclough, run a very well managed property "Eulameet", in the Western District of Victoria. They have been using Coora sires for many years in their large, well-established Corriedale flock. They also run a highly specialised lamb production enterprise and operate a successful Hereford stud. Have a look at the Coora sires results

Coora Corriedale flock on LAMBPLAN search engine.

Have you got specific trait requirements? Use the new search engine on the LAMBPLAN web site to sort for the specifics you require.

This will be a great boon to maternal breeders when more stud breeders put their flocks onto this program. These people will then be able to search all breeds for the best sheep in Australia for their needs.

Test the search engine on the LAMBPLAN web site for your self. All that you need to do is punch in your requirements. For example, select Corriedale in the breed section, and try the average for Number of Lambs Weaned of 4, as a minimum. In the Weaning Weight a minimum of 1.5, a Yearling Weight min of the average 2.2, and in the Yearling Greasy Fleece Weight section, a minimum of the average 0.09. Sort on any one of these ASBV’s, say NLW, and click submit, and you should get about 250 sheep come up. Try it and see.

Tony Manchester selects the top sire on lambplan for his new sire.

Tony and his sheep advisor Neville Manglesdorf traveled down from Kingsvale in NSW to inspect Coora 2000.60 the top sire on Corriedale LAMBPLAN indices. They were not disappointed and took him home for use in their Roseville Stud in 2003. This ram had been used at Coora in 2002. On the LAMBPLAN run of 15/8/2003 he still had the highest Corriedale Sires index of 140.85, and the highest NLW ASBV of 18, on the first page of the Elite’s, He is in the top 1% of the breed for Number of Lambs Weaned.
